Time Flies By

It is 1pm and I have grabbed a moment in my day to do a little blogging update. I was going to try my best to keep this one going for the folks back home but as those of you with children will understand time is precious and spare time is not that abundant.
Norah Jones is playing in the background along with the intermittent grunt from my child. She's cute like that. She grunts baby grunts in her sleep and it is entirely cute. I could use this time to put out more washing, read a book, sleep, eat some more each equally as worthy, some more of a necessity than blogging but oh well. Blog it is!

This Saturday Abbey will be six weeks old. I can hardly believe it and yet at the same time in a wonderful way it seems like she has been in our lives for a while and I can hardly imagine life without her.

So how has it been over the last month...
Well all in all I think we've taken to parenthood pretty good thus far. By no means is it a walk in the park but we've taken the chilled out approach and just let it happen. Abbey has been wonderful and broken us in gently to the world of parental responsibility and having a little person so dependent on you for everything.
These are a few of the things we get up to
Eat - She has taken well to breastfeeding and it's quite delightful to see her excitement when she's just about to start feeding and she can obviously smell the milk. She gets all excited at the impending feed and starts throwing her head around with mouth wide open in eager search of dinner but in the process totally misses.

Sleep - we're getting there with sleep. From day one I haven't found it too too hard to cope with the lack of sleep. Perhaps it's being used to adapting to different times or hours of sleep which working nights as a nurse brings, I don't know, but i only find it too much if a few rough nights are combined with over active days. We're slowly finding that balance. We have been trying to keep to a bit of a routine and Abbey sticks to it fairly well having a nap in the morning and afternoon and a longer sleep in the middle of the day allowing me to get a few things done and have some lunch in peace. She's in bed by 7pm so we get dinner without interruption and then awake again at 1030pm for a feed that hopefully lasts her till about 3/3:30am and then sleeps till 7am. We've had a few nights where she's been waking at 2am and 5am but last night we got back on track so hopefully she will just wake once again tonight. It seems like we have had it pretty good as far as lack of sleep goes.

please note: we do not endorse co-sleeping, this was just a snuggle time and actually it is Ryan who is asleep

Ryan has employed earplugs and they seem to do the trick. She's not that noisy in the night but we have had the odd problem with a bit of wind which is obviously very uncomfortable for the poor wee soul.

Play - As Abbey becomes more alert she's coping with more time on her mat or in the bouncy chair but it's still not much. I noticed the other night when I put her to bed that she is starting to follow her mobile as it goes round and round above her head. She is able to follow us a bit more too. If you talk to her and move slowly she will track you with her big eyes.

Bath - After a couple of weeks bathing in the sink we progressed to the much more styley bucket which served us well and then just yesterday we graduated to the baby bath (no I haven't cut my hair short and gone totally grey - Grandma did the bathing honours tonight). Abbey has loved the water from day one and really seemed to enjoy a good kick in the bigger bath. I'm sure she'd stay in there a lot longer than I allow her if she had the choice.

Outings -We try and get out and about a bit making the most of sunny days and sleep times as the moment Abbey is put in the pram or car she'll be out to it. We bought a sling which has been fab. There's various ways to carry your child in it and we've tried most of them that are suitable for her at this age. She seems to like it and it is wonderful to have her so close and snugglely. It's great being hands free too. We can go for a walk to the shops for a few things and I can carry her and bags in each hand.
